How tyre manufacturers meet all the requirements of the new TPMS obligation
From 1 July 2024, TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring systems) will be mandatory for all new trucks. In a leading partnership, elunic has joined forces with the renowned tyre manufacturer Maxion Wheels and developed an innovative solution that ensures that all tyres manufactured meet the requirements of the new law on the use of a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) by automatically checking the TPMS sensors.
Challenges of the TPMS obligation
However, the production of millions of tyres with these TPMS sensors means considerable investment in production technology. Ensuring that the sensors are integrated flawlessly into each individual tyre is also a complex task for tyre manufacturers, as the sensors must be positioned and calibrated with extreme precision so that the tyre pressure can be explicitly monitored.
Manually checking the quality requirements of these sensors, such as their presence and proper installation, is extremely time-consuming, costly and, of course, prone to errors when large numbers of tyres are produced. If errors in sensor integration are overlooked, this can lead to product recalls and damage consumer confidence in the tyre brand.
Automatic check for TPMS sensors with AI.SEE
To meet these challenges, with AI.SEE™ we provide Maxion Wheels with a state-of-the-art, automated solution that allows them to significantly increase both the precision and efficiency of the TPMS sensor checks in each tyre. This enables Maxion Wheels to ensure that the production of their tyres meets all the legal requirements of the TPMS obligation while guaranteeing the quality and safety of their manufactured tyres.
Our automatic inspection uses highly advanced image processing technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to scan the tyres for the presence and functionality of the TPMS sensors. As soon as a sensor is detected, the automatic quality assurance checks whether it is correctly positioned on the tyre and can reliably measure the tyre pressure. If all quality requirements for the sensors and their positioning are met, the tyre is marked for further processing.
Advantages of automated TPMS sensor testing
We are delighted to be working with Maxion Wheels and that we can make a contribution to safety and efficiency in the transport sector with our automated quality inspection of TPMS sensors.
